RULES

–MOST COMMON–

You will see different penalty minutes below, there is DISCRETION from the referee on how long the penalty is served, most are called as 1 minute. There may be different approaches to these USA Lacrosse rules depending on the game/tournament.

ILLEGAL PHYSICAL FOULS

  1. CROSS CHECK > typically a 1 minute penalty > Change of Possession (COP)
  2. BODY CHECK, DEFENSELESS PLAYER > 2 or 3 min penalty > COP
  3. HEAD/NECK CHECK > 2 or 3 min penalty, Non-releasble, COP
  4. PUSHING If offending team has possession > COP, if offended team has possession > 30 sec penalty, COP
  5. SLASHING (you know it when you see it) > typically a 1 min penalty > COP
  6. SLASH TO HEAD > 1 to 3 min penalty > COP
  7. HOLDING (ie pinning with stick, arms in a prolonged v-hold) > 30 second penalty, COP
  8. TRIPPING > 1 to 3 minutes, COP
  9. BODY CHECK > Needs to be within 3 yards of lose ball > COP
  10. TARGETING (of a player) > Basically any of the major personal fouls, the offending player is ejected from game after serving a 3 minute nonreleasable penalty > COP
  11. UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS > 1 to 3 minute nonreleasable penalty, COP
  12. WARD (extending hand beyond body frame) > COP

 

FIELD & OTHER

  1. CLEAR > Clearing team has 20 seconds over midline, 10 seconds to into Restraining Box, failure to clear > COP
  2. OVER AND BACK > offensive team gains possession in defensive end, crosses midline then forced back into defensive end > COP
  3. MOVING PICK/ILLEGAL SCREENING > COP
  4. DEAD BALL FOUL (After a goal scored, then the ball is awarded to the offended team at midfield, no faceoff) > 1. Unnecessary Roughness 2. Unsportsmanlike Conduct Slashing Illegal Body Check Illegal Crosse Cross-Check Conduct Foul
  5. ILLEGAL POCKET or STICK > 2 minute nonreleasable > COP
  6. FOULING OUT > Player has 3 personal penalties or 5 mins of penalties > ejected > COP
  7. OFFSIDES > Team cannot have more than 6 players in offensive end of field or more than 7 players in defensive end (this includes players serving penalties) > COP
  8. ILLEGAL PROCEDURE > There are over 30 of these, in appendix and often a COP 

 

OTHER NOTES

  1. Releasable penalty (if offended team scores while man up, offending player is released)
  2. Nonreleasble penalty (if offended team scores while man up, offending player is released)
  3. 2 Timeouts per HALF
  4. IF team is ahead by 4 goals, and within last 2 mins, must keep within RESTRAINING BOX (ie Goal Area) > failure will result in COP
  5. Personal Fouls (illegal checks etc) 1, 2, or 3 minutes, depending on the official’s judgment of the severity and perceived intent of the personal foul.
  6. Only players in possession of the ball, within three yards of a loose ball can be stick checked
